This special edition of The Medicine Box is accompanied by a CD of music played on a traditional Chinese instrument called the guqin. Produced specifically for inclusion with this book, Tao: Blue Mountain Meditation Music features contemporary guqin master Wu Ziying playing a well-known antique guqin named The Perfectly Harmonized Jade and Pearl Qin which is more than 800 years old. The melodies, which date from the 3rd to the 17th centuries, flow in a continuous unbroken stream to carry the listener into ever-deepening absorption. The music of the Chinese guqin represents one of the longest unbroken musical traditions in the world. For over 2000 years, this music has been regarded in China as the summit of musical achievement. Guqin music was said to restore the body, and even to bring enlightenment. Because of this it was the favorite instrument for masters of study and meditation who saw it as a way to tune the heart. The guqin was played privately, and rarely, if ever, in public. In listening to this kind of music, it is said:
Listening with the ears brings relaxation;
Listening with the heart brings tranquility;
Listening with the chi brings unity with the universal energy.
While listening to this music, one has the sense that it contains a depth of meaning which extends beyond the mere notes. In the same way, we hope our readers will find that book opens the way to a realm of meaning that extends beyond the stories.
